WILD BIRD AND ANIMAL PHOTOGRAPHY WITH MOTION PICTURE CAMERAS.

The author is a professional ornithologist who has been participating annually for thirty years in expeditions to Taimir, Yakutia, Chukot Peninsula, some islands of the Arctic Ocean and a number of other regions of north eastern Siberia. Keen in living nature photography, the author having started with traditional methods of photography approach or from a blind using a telephoto lens, gradually began to give preference to motion picture camera that he himself designed  and gradually improved. The two main advantages of photography with serial cameras were taken into account.
To begin with, this technique gives an opportunity to take photographs of rare and quite alert birds and mammals in nature, even of those that can be seen far not every year. Quite mistaken is the commonly held view that wild birds and animals occur all over the vast territory of Siberia and the Far East and that they are not afraid of man. In reality, the northern biotas are much less productive than those in temperate climates. Animals dwelling in taiga and tundra have preserved their primeval fear for man and are quite scarce in those regions. Therefore, photography of many representatives of the wild fauna under such conditions is incomparably more difficult than in cultivated landscapes, particularly in parks and reserves. Use of serial cameras in these conditions does not only make the work of an animal photographer easier, but also gives an opportunity to obtain valuable scientific information.
The second reason that the author began developing this particular kind of equipment is the opportunity to use average size films to get images in minute detail, which is essential in scientific photography. To achieve this using average size film using a telephoto lens is extremely difficult because the equipment that one has to carry about is quite heavy and cumbersome.

The principal arrangement of photographic cameras
Depending on the purpose, the author used serial cameras of very diverse arrangements. The most simple are cameras 6 x 6, 6 x 9, or 6 x 12 cm in size with a central shutter and ground-glass  focusing. At the moment of focusing, the ground-glass is inserted in the place of cassette. Thes shutter releases by 6 12 volt battery-operated electromagnet. Such cameras are usually fitted with a special flap that protectis the lens and shuttrer mechanism  from rain or snow, and also protectis film from being light-struck through the shutter in case of a prolonged exposure to sun rays. The flap is removed automatically with electromagnet that releases the shutter when the picture is taken. Rewinding  the film and cocking the shutter are performed manually and, therefore, in the absence of photographer only one photograph can be taken at a time by this metod. These cameras are fitted with lenses 75-135 mm focal

length ( depending on frame sixe) and are normally used for taking photographs of large mammals on trails where they occur sporadically ( once in several days or even weeks).
For photographing animals on  the paths  freguently used, or near bait when a necessity may arise to take 2 - 3 or more photographs per day or even in a very short period of time, the author has constructed cameras of 6 9 cm in size with  the lens 110 mm, central shutter and mirror or ground-glass focusing. There are modifications with two lenses or one lens with a collapsable mirror. As in the modifications already described, such cameras are fitted with electromagnetic release and mobile flap closing the lens from the outside and  the machanism for rewinding and cocking the shutter. The circuit diagram of such a camera provides for blocking  the shutter at the moment the film is rewinding and after exposure of the last frame. Depending on the electric motors used, the time of one frame reloading can be 5 to 20 seconds. Dry batteries 9 - 12 v,  0.5 a.h. capacity  are provide the exposure of  20-30 standart  rollfilms in the warm season. In the winter period one has to use the batteries  with increased capacity.
Serial cameras for photographing the birds were provided  with 210-300 mm lenses that are optimal for these purposes. In different construction size of frame in cameras for photographing birds varies from 4.5 x 6 to 6 x 12 cm, the cameras have ground-glass focusing. The central shutter is usually placed in front of the lens, and a cassete of a standard roll film is readily removable. There is a camera with a set of cassettes of different frame sizes. Extension ( tabes or bellows) combined with a lens having a comparatively long focal distance allows to get quite large-scale images without extremely approaching the camera to the object of photographing. An obligatory element of such cameras is an automatic rewinding the film and cocking  the shutter. Such cameras usually do not possess flaps for protecting lens or shutter from rain and snow or direct sun rays. They are usually set for a relatively short time and durig clean weather.
The author has given up the electronics in almost all of his cameras and, therefore, most of them are reliable at a temperature of at leastup to minus 40° C. All serial cameras are fitted with a light, readily removable, metallic protective hood for the purpose of disguise.  The boxes are covered  with khaki and provided with a nut for tripod fixing. Weight of most serial cameras is 1 - 1.5 kg ( devices making one shot at a time) to 3 - 5 kg.
Lighting units
The author is convinced that the best light source for colour photography is good sunlight. However, one cannot always use it.  Many mammal species are either nocturnal or crepuscular and are seldom active during daylight. Nany birds build their nests on the ground, in shadow of trees or bushes and in other places that do not get enough daylight. Eventually, weather itself, especially on the sea coast and on the islands, does not always favour photography using daylight. Sometimes it is preferable to use  flash lamps even at good sunlight, e.g., photographing fast moving small mammals or birds at close distance.
The best artificial light source for wild bird and animal photography is undoubtedly the electronic flash. Most portable electronic flashes intended for indoor photography are useless in nature. This is related to the considerable energy  losses,  and the necessity to stop the lens deeply to get a sharp image on an average sizeframe.  Therefore I prefer  to use the flash lamps not less than 200 J and  up to 1000 J.  Most my flashes are fitted with 2 parabolic reflectors, also mirror reflectors of searchlight are used, which allow to set up the flash some distance away from the object of photography. To photograph  fast-moving animals special flashes have been designed with  0.0001 s burning time or even less.  These  powerful flashes are suppliede with 12 v  rechargeable batterries and electronic voltage converters as most flash lamps work only under 300 - 600 v. As flashes should be in the state of constant readiness for many days or even weeks, they are fitted with automatic switches for maintenance of voltage to the capacitors in order to energizie the flash within the limits prescribed. Naturally, all the flash lamps intended for serial cameras are well isolated from moisture and can work without failure even under most unfavourable weather conditions.
If one uses the simplest serial cameras that can make one shot at a time ( especially when they stand long ready for photographing waiting for an appropriate object to appear) use of heavy and power-intensive impulse flash bulbs will not be reasonable. Therefore, in such cases one should give preference to the single strike flashes, e.g., to the zirconeum lamps, that are very light and do not require any  special  source of firing. These can be initiated by the same battery as the electromagnet of the shutter release.
In the  large mammals photography, when powerful light source is particularly needed, I fully succeded with the plastic tubes filled with a mixture of aluminium powder and powdered potassium permanganate. Ignition of the mixture was done by a  thin nickeline thread connected in series with a gaseous-discharge lamp of low-power impulse flash. The flash is connected with to the synchronizer of the shutter in a usual way, and inflammation in this case is so quick that no ignition-advance is needed. One should mind the fire risk of such electric tubes and handle them with care.

Various modifications of using serifl cameras in bird photography.
It is very convenient to use serial cameras for the remote control photography of birds at the nests. Prior to placing equipment nearby, one should observe it  from a blind pinpoint the direction from where  the bird approaches the nest, where and for how long it lands, how often it comes, etc. All these detalls are very important in further arranging the equipment. The camera is fixed on a tripod or by some other way close to the nest, and is focuszed on the site where the bird is most likely to appear . In accordance with the lighting conditions, illuminators are set in the same place. Photography is greatly facilitated if all this equipment is set up 3 - 4 days before photographing so that the birds  get used to it. To pursue this result equipment decoys can be also used. It should be taken into account that birds may fell nervous about the alien objects, therefore, it would be better to first place the equipment some distance from the nest to let the birds get used to it. The operator stays 10 - 50 metres from the nest depending on the locality, location of the nest and caution of the object of photography. A special hide may not be used, as in most cases it is enough to camouflage oneself  in a natural shelter. A light double wire with a limit switch stretches from the camera to the shelter. The operator holds it and can make a shot at any moment. It is better if the watcher is provided with binoculars or telescope fixed rigidly on a tripod in the position required. As compared to the traditional method of photography from a bhind the advantage of this method is that the operator does not stand close to the nest and feels much less constrained. Also, the birds are much less disturbed by a small camera than by any  most compact blind. One should bear in mind that when film of average size is used efficiency of lenses with a focal distance of even 300 mm is much lower than in photography on a 24 x 36 mm frame and to take a close-up-picture the camera should be set up much nearer to the object of photography. For the same purpose the lens should be stopped down considerably, e.g., down to 16, f 22 or even further. As a result acceptable sharpness of the picture and excellent presentation of minute details is attained, which is highly desirable in scientific photography. The lenses used by the author have the highest resolving power at a stop of f 16 - 32. In photography with a serial camera it is desirable to have a lens with a small aperture also because in case of distance control the photographer has no opportunity to adjust focusing of the lens. Hense the advantage of using films with sufficiently high speed and powerful light units, the more so as it is desirable at this kind of photography to use short exposure of 1/100 - 1/200 s or even less. In photography of some bird species, particularly small and mobile ones, it is desirable to use a special flash with a supershort time of lamp discharge.
Photographing of large and alert birds such as swans, geese, cranes and raptors is performed in a similar manner, but from a distance of 500 - 1500 m. For shutter release I succeded using a slightly modified remote control set.
Of the methods, when photography is performed automatically in the absence of man, the simplest one is photographing the birds during the incubation period with a time-lapse unit. This device switches the circuit of shutter after any given time interval within two days and beginning from that moment makes a number of shots in given time intervals. Using this method one has to photograph mainly motionless birds and at the moment lighting conditions of which can be known beforehand. Some cameras are fitted with a device automatically switching off the circuit of shutter release in dull weather. Therefore, there is no point in using flash lamps in this kind of photography.
It is more difficult, but more promising  to photograph with  contact devices that are switched on by  the subject itself . Designs of these devices are diverse and are usually quite simple and there are great possibilities of improvising. The main point is that they should be small, can be well disguised in the field and that their contacts should not remain closed when the bird has already left the site. Sometimes, a special circuit was used for shutter release where photoresistor was used as a sensor. It is clear, that photography with serial cameras using the contact device is possible not only near nests. The author has successfully performed it in sites of feeding, resting and perching, i.e. some protruding snags, stones, etc.
Similarly, the author photographed small and average - sized mammals with serial cameras. In photography of voles and small predators the impulse flash bulbs should be used. It is desirable that these should be special flash bulbs with accelerated discharge time. Since these animals are usually active in the dusk or during night, natural light may not be taken into account. Miniature sensor devices put at the entrance of the burrow on a path or in tree trunk give an opportunity to take snapshots of even such swiftly moving small animals as weasel and ermine.
It is difficult or probably even impossible to take such pictures using traditional photography methods. Even if the photographer is patient enough to watch for the animal near the camera focussed on a certain site, his reaction most probably will not be as quick as to release the shutter at the moment when the animal appears. Sometimes, it is efficient to use baits that is put on a certain place and to take photographs as the animal approaches it.  There is need to duiguise cameras or lighting units when photographing small mammals.  Unlike birds they react slightly, if at all, to the alien objects.
Photography of larger animals such as hare, fox, or wolverine can be very efficient on paths, not only in winter, but also during the snowless period. It is easy to photograph such predators as fox and particularly wolverine near remnants of prey of wolves or bears, close by carcasses of moose that get frozen in the ice of rivers. These animals also react slightly to the equipment and or to its smell. In photographing them powerful flash bulbs should be used.
As concerns photography of the largest northern mammals such as moose or brown bear, easiest way is to take pictures on the paths along river banks,  cliff edges, lake isthmuses, etc. Peculiarity of the bearўs paths is a “double track”. It is not always possible to determine by the appearance of the path how frequently the animals use it, but one should not expect immediate results. Therefore, when photographing large animals it is much more efficient to use cameras without automatic reloading, but to set up several cameras in different places. One other advantage of such cameras is that no special contact devices are needed to put them into action. I successfully used a piece of fishing-line stretched across the path. Strained by an animal it closed two naked copper wires fixed on tree branches or bushes. Lighting units are needed, since elk and bears normally move in the dusk or during night. With serial cameras of single action it is more convenient to use zirconium or chemical flashes. After a shot is made, particularly if the chemical flash has worked, it would be better to set up the camera on a different path. Large animals frightened by bright light and noise of chemical flash seldom appear near that place in the next few days or even weeks except those rare occasions when many animals use the path independently. The brown bear is particularly alert. Usually, it is enough to use even noisless flash lamps to make the animal avoid that place for a long time. Sometimes, however, bear is attracted by the sight and smell of the foreingn object. It may then touch the camera with a paw or even with teeth, however the author has never observed any serious damage caused by bears to the equipment. One can successfully take pictures of bears also close by carrion, e.g., near a killed moose. However, this is a rare opportunity. Also, it is quite dangerous to approach  bearўs prey, therefore, two people should set up the equiment and have a gun in readiness.
If it is necessary to take picture of the animal in full height and looking in the lens of the camera, a special relay is mounted in the shutter release circuit, it first switches the buzzer and a small lamp and after 1 - 2 s  it releases the shutter. Such devices have been successfully used to obtain photographs of black-capped marmot, fox, wolverine and some birds.
In conclusion, I would like to state that photography of wild animals in nature, if performed in earnest, is a fascinating occupation, in any case not less that active photo hunting using a telephoto lens. However as in the latter case, or probably even to a higher degree, success can be ensured mainly by a detailed knowledge of animal ecology and behaviour that by availability of the appropriate equipment and researsherўs acquaintance with the basic principles of photography.
