CLASSICAL DECORATION MOTIVES AND THE SOVIET SYMBOLS IN ARCHITECTURE OF MAGADAN
The Project is designed and developed by initiative of the Magadan group of the Union of Translators of Russia.
The project leader is T.N.Velikoda.

The buildings of Magadan constructed in the 1940s-1960s are of a peculiar interest for the city visitors owing to the exterior décor style that is a harmonic unity of classical design and the Soviet symbols. Classical structural elements include monumental columns and small colon-nades, portico entrances, frontons (gables) and cartouches decorated with floral and geometric ornaments, also bas-reliefs, and some other features. The Stalin Empire style, which flourished and achieved its culmination in those years, is represented by the Soviet symbols, which propa-gated the all-conquering power of the Communist ideology and were to inspire people with the strong faith in the bright future of the Soviet country. These are the sculptures and bar-relief sublime images of Stalin and Lenin, also mighty figures of workers, peasants and the Soviet sol-diers; minor architectural forms typically include bas-reliefs of the Red Banner and Red Star, also the Hammer and Sickle that is the national emblem of the Soviet Union, which fit harmonically into the classical décor motives.
